UK Census Records

The UK census for England, Scotland, Wales, Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man, was taken every 10 years starting in 1841.

The census results are made available to the public after 100 years, so census records for every decade from 1841 through 1901 are now available, with the 1911 census being available in 2012.

The questions asked on each census varied, but normally you can find useful genaelogy research information such as:

  1. names of other household members,
  2. ages,
  3. birthplaces
  4. residence,
  5. occupation,
  6. Details of specific relationships to head of family
  7. By using Census you can build a basic family tree in a short time. This records place your ancestor(s) in a particular location at the time of the census. With this knowledge you can branch out to nearby churches, cemeteries, parish records and civil, birth, death and marrigae records to find more detailed information.
